Breakthrough in camera technology.

These two guys at Rochester figured out a couple of advances that may let digital cameras run for years on a single charge. The innovations depend on a) reducing the number of transistors to allow more light to pass through, and b) arranging hardware elements to assist in what is traditionally a software task: image compression. The result is cameras that take way less image to capture a photo.

The trick with aligning the pixels to cosine peaks (resulting in a non-uniform sensor array) is brilliant.

Okay, this is old (March '05) but it's about the guys behind Linux on iPod -- apparently they hijacked the scroll wheel clicker and got it to play out the iPod's bootloader code as a series of clicks. They recorded the clicks, and then wrote a decoder to reassemble the sounds back into code on a PC (no word on if it was Mac, Windows or Linux box).

Reminds me of that scene in Ghost in the Shell when they wire up that translator's head to see if she's been hacked.

Singaporean computer scientists create an augmented-reality version of Pac-Man. You wear goggles to see the streets around you lined with 3-D yellow dots, which disappear as you collect them. The game tracks your position and other players can catch you. Spectators can instant-message you with tips.
